Boil a pot of water at medium heat.
In a separate bowl, add egg whites and place the bowl on top of the pot of boiling water.
With a whisk, whisk the egg whites consistently, making sure they do not cook. Then, add sugar.
Once the sugar is dissolved, transfer the mixture to a mixer bowl and mix. A hand mixer can also be used.
Continue mixing until the mixture is white and foamy. Add vanilla and cream of tartar. You can also add food coloring or spices of your choice at this time.
Continue mixing until the cream forms stiff peaks. This means that the cream can keep its form. You can test this by putting the bowl upside down, and the cream will not fall.
You can now use this nondairy whipped cream to top your muffins, coffee, or hot chocolate drink.
